My Home-made Fan Controller
What do you do when you have 6 fans in your computer and can't stand the noise?
Slow the fans down with a fan controller. This is how I did it.
This requires a regulator (such as the LM317), a potentiometer, 2 capacitors, 2 resistors, a molex connector, a circuit board, wire and solder.
Here's my horribly rough schematic:
First I connected the components with alligator cables. I tried a few different resistors to find the correct resistance that allows all the fans to start spinning with the potentiometer at its lowest setting.
Then I soldered the board.:
Next I drilled holes in the circuit board and the bottom of my computer case, and I mounted the board.:
I used an empty 3.5" bay on my case to mount the potentiometer, and added a sweet retro dial. It matches my beige floppy drive very well, wouldn't you say?
And this is my cat trying to eat the potentiometer:
